In an interview with Starpulse, "The Wonder Years" stars Danica McKellar, Olivia d'Aboand Alley Mills reveal they don't mind when fans confuse them with their iconic television characters. The trio have lived vicariously through their alter-egos for so long they laugh, "They're part of our DNA!"
Said d'Abo, "We visit with these characters every day." Concurred McKellar, "Everyday, somebody recognizes one of us on the street from the show. We get to be that character in some form. We get to see people with happy looks on their faces and they say, 'Oh my gosh, I miss that show so much! My family watched it together.' We get to feel how special that experience was over and over again."
Mills had a different take on the topic. "It all started with the writing, which was wonderful. Being on that show was a great gift, the way it touched every walk of life. It is so rare that writing can do that. These types of things last and I would say we were really lucky in that respect."
With so many topical subjects addressed on the series, based in a time when the world was exploring new options of how to think, believe, dress and express yourself, was there one topic these women would have liked to seen fleshed out more than others? Revealed d'Abo, "Believe it or not, I think of all the topical subjects we approached what I would have liked to seen more was the relationship between the adults on the show, Norma and Jack. I would have loved to seen what happened with their relationship as baby boomers because I think viewers would have found that very interesting."
She continued, "I remember an episode called 'Pottery' and there was this brilliant moment in the scene when Norma and Jack were at the kitchen sink and the kids, Karen, Kevin and Wayne, are looking at them. It is this momentous occassion where as their kids, we got to see just how truly in love they were. How their relationship had a softness and vulnerability. It just was something we didn't get to see often on the series."
