'The Mindy Project' Season Premiere: Woah, Nelly

tmp 1
Mindy Lahiri and Danny Castellano declared their love for one another in the season two finale and it would have been a satisfying end to their saga had the show not been picked up for a third season. But thank god that that happened because Danny and Mindy dating is maybe my favorite thing on TV.
Not only is their sexual chemistry hot, hot, hot, but their first major couple squabble is rather hilarious. Mindy, over-sharer that she prides herself in being, is telling everyone how great Danny is at sex and all of Danny’s tiny, boring secrets. The office is, of course, thrilled to learn one more thing about Dr. C, the guy who was such a massive dick only a few years ago.
But becoming friends and then lovers with Mindy has only shown what a soft interior Danny has and that he actually cares about his coworkers. When he spots Jeremy (whose name I had to look up by the way because he hasn’t had a plot line since season 1) back rubbing Peter’s girlfriend Lauren, he is conflicted about it. But then he tells blabbermouth Lahiri about it. And when Mindy tells someone something, the whole office knows.
Mindy tells her pal Morgan, chipper and slightly creepy as usual who hangs out with his pal Cousin Lou (It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia’s Rob McElhenney, who is rather terrific). Cousin Lou and Morgan went to jail together after Lou ratted his homeboy out for less time. Straddling the line between casually dangerous and stupidly harmless, Cousin Lou is the one who manages to tell Peter about Jeremy and Lauren banging.
Which leads to an awkward confrontation at the charity gala Mindy definitely doesn’t want to attend (the last time she donated money was two cans of soup to get into a Katy Perry Q&A which she is way too proud of). Peter punches Jeremy and the two have a little bit of a cat fight (there was absolutely no skill in that fight). Jeremy and Lauren have been friends for years, so Jeremy vows to pursue Lauren even if she’s dating Peter. Oh, it’s on like Donky Kong for these two.
There’s another fight brewing between Mindy and Danny, again over secrets. Danny may have been able to take Mindy telling everyone he saw Jeremy and Laruen together, but his personal private past? Another story. See, Mindy Lahiri finds a thong with the word “Diamond" on the back and assumes it is another girl. Plot twist: it’s Danny Diamond’s,  male stripper. It’s a perfect and embarrassing secret for Danny that Mindy can’t help but share with everyone she ever knows. Danny put his dancing schools to work to pay for Med School and help his mom out. But seriously, how perfect is this?
So it comes down to their first big test in their relationship. Relationship Hurdle Number One: can they trust each other with their secrets?
A heart to heart proves that, yes, they can Mindy confesses that she needs to constantly over-share about her life as to make sure it is real. Danny keeps secrets because he has a hard time trusting people. Except Mindy, he can trust her. A collective aww is said by my whole family.
But it gets better: the teaser has Danny do a sexy strip dance to “American Woman” for Mindy before they aggressively make out. Don’t believe me?
For a season premiere, The Mindy Project brought everything I loved in the first two seasons and more. The jokes roared along, the cast was game (looking at you, Chris Messina) and the show remembered it has other characters besides Mindy and Danny. And the premiere also made me bitter to remember that neither Kaling nor Messina have been nominated for an Emmy. There's always next year. Until then, let's review the jokes.
Favorite Jokes:
  • "I don’t want to live in a world where a rude schlub like Peter can lose his woman to a handsome, decent man!”
  • "Woah, Nelly," is what Danny says when he climaxes. It gets funnier every time someone says it.
  • Best visual gag: Cousin Lou has a tattoo of what I believe to be Michael Douglas on his throat, which is disturbingly funny since Michael Douglas had throat cancer.
  • I couldn't write the jokes down fast enough, but any time Mindy goes on a pseudo-feminist rant and makes jokes at white men’s expense makes me happy.
That’s it for now! I’ll be live tweeting Mindy Project every week so check me out on Twitter. Did you like tonight's episode? What are your favorite jokes? Comment below or tell me on Twitter. Cheers!src of starpulse.com/
